The Grahamstown environment
Grahamstown is the home of the National Festival of the Arts, the National Festival of Science and Technology, Rhodes University, numerous schools, beautiful churches and many historical and architectural treasures. The town is an educational centre devoted to learning and is an ideal environment for the stimulation and development of young people. Situated close to the sea, near to major conservation initiatives and in the centre of a diverse farming area, St Andrew’s College can offer of pupils access to these resources during the course of their education. Excursions to outlying areas of interest are frequent, and marine exploration, historical tours and similar outdoor activities form part of the extended curriculum. The prevalence of educational institutions in Grahamstown enables St Andrew’s College to draw on members of the community – academics, legal practitioners, researchers, writers, scholars – to contribute to the school programme. The town cares about its schools, and local shops and businesses cater for the needs of the pupils. An upmarket shopping centre with a small cinema complex is situated within walking distance of the School and our pupils are able to enjoy a degree of independence not easily obtained in larger towns. Port Elizabeth is the nearest large city with an airport, and it takes approximately 80 minutes to reach Grahamstown by car. The St Andrew’s College travel co-ordinator is able to arrange for pupils to be collected from the airport and for most other travel requirements. |
